THIS IS work

Hello!
TOTO! JE ŠTÚDIO

MY NAME IS MAJA ROJKO

I live in Bratislava. I love it when things are beautiful in their content and functional in their form, and I aim to reflect this in my work.

This studio came into existence after a long freelance pilgrimage through the worlds of graphic design and advertising.

I enjoy working on projects that involve my favourite topics and which bring nice people my way. Here are some of them. Please, have a look…

THIS IS BOOK

represents a great achievement of the Artforum publishing house. It tells a story of love, death, jogging and living in a totalitarian greyness. It was first published in a samizdat (self-published) form of three autobiographical novels in the 1980s.

In May 2015 it was republished 25 years after its first official edition. When working on this book, I invited Miloš Kopták who brought his visually and interpretatively rich objects of art and Zuzana Knězeková who took the photographs. All three of us have vivid memories of the Communist regime…

Ódy či frašky
Divadelný ústav Bratislava

THIS IS A BOOK
— COLLECTION OF SCRIPTS

This is a project which I worked on in cooperation with the Bratislava Theatre Institute (Divadelný ústav Bratislava). It is a collection of scripts written by 19 Slovak authors on the common topic of the EU (through the eyes of drama).

The Theatre Institute accepted the challenge to make the edition different. The idea was to make every author in this “book” stand out. Each author has his or her own volume and the volumes are collected in a box.

Jón K. Stefánsson, Letné svetlo...
Artfórum

THIS IS A BOOK REALLY THRILLED ME

I didn’t know J. K. Steffánson, or more precisely his writing, before working on this project.

The quirky and curious stories of inhabitants of a small Icelandic sea-shore village drew me into their own micro-world full of fatal connections, melancholy, cheating, and the feeling that nothing happens out of the blue… because everything is in the stars. Or isn’t it?

The book won the prize in the fiction category of The Most Beautiful Slovak Book awards 2014 (organized by Bibiana – the International House of Art for Children).

Aladinova čarovná lampa
Divadlo Aréna

THIS IS A VISUAL ACCOMPANIMENT
TO A CHILDREN'S MUSICAL PLAY

called Aladdin’s Magical Lamp (Aladinova čarovná lampa), which was performed at the Aréna Theatre in Bratislava. I invited the excellent Slovak illustrator and artist Miloš Kopták to work on this project with me. Our programme includes a board game that children can play at home to experience Aladdin’s story again and again.

Jana Kirschner, Moruša
Slnkorecords

THIS IS MORUŠA

an unparalleled music compilation by Jana Kirschner, a Slovak singer living in London. It consists of two albums – Moruša biela (White Mulberry) and Moruša čierna (Black Mulberry).

The illustrations on these albums were created by English illustrator Eoin Ryan, who created them especially for Jana. The project was demanding but at the same time beautiful. This double album has been released thanks to great support from Shina of Slnko Records.

Zuzana Homolová, Nět vekšeho...
Slnkorecords

THIS A MUSICAL PROJECT I TRULY LOVE

Folk lyrics with music by Zuzka Homolová and Samo Smetana on an album named Nět vekšeho rozkošu (There’s Nothing Better). This time I made the illustrations myself, the case was tailor-made and printed by Tomáš Ďurovka, a silk-screen printer.

The bags were sewn by Zuzka Homolová who created the stamp as well. The resemblance to 18th century grocer’s booklets is not accidental. Thank you Slnkorecords for this project.

Hra Bratislava
pán Medvedík

Historical Board Game

Learn about the history of Bratislava, become an Enlightener, roam the narrow streets of the medieval Old Town and discover all its nooks and crannies.

In 1778, Bratislava is still called Prešporok, and people of various nationalities live there side by side: Slovaks, Hungarians, who call it Pozsony, and Germans, who call it Pressburg. The wise Queen Maria Theresa reigns there. The enlightened scientist Johann Wolfgang von Kempelen lives in Dunajská Street and the outstanding sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt works in the part of town called Vydrica. But the Executioner of Prešporok has not said his last word yet, although there is no place for him in the Age of Enlightenment any more. The Executioner does not like this new, progressive world, so his intent is to spread intrigue and cause as much damage as he can.
